Apr 03 PERTH (FREMANTLE), AUSTRALIA

THE MOUTH OF SWAN RIVER
Nicknamed Freo by the locals, Fremantle is friendly and welcoming, eclectic and eccentric. Located in Western Australia on the Swan River, it is a cosmopolitan city with a hippy-vibe featuring fabulous artisanal food, handcrafted beers, quirky music and a lively music and arts scene. Known for its Victorian architecture, maritime history and one-time role as a British penal colony, it is also a gateway to Perth, home to enchanting parks, beaches and a Mediterranean-like climate.

A COASTAL TREASURE
Though surrounded by several inland national parks and reserves, a main draw of the Western Australian coastal town of Jurien Bay is its marine park, a hot spot for swimming, snorkeling, diving and other water sports. The park's extensive network of limestone reefs and shallow lagoons provides the perfect meeting place for sea lions, dolphins and a variety of colorful fish. Within the park are dozens of ecologically important islands where rare and endangered animals make their home.

UNTOUCHED ISLES
The Abrolhos Islands beckon with beguiling vistas. The stretch of 122 reef-surrounded isles and atolls sits in the Indian Ocean, about 37 miles west of the Western Australian town of Geraldton. A magnet for nature lovers, divers and snorkelers, the islands host large colonies of seabirds and marine mammals, including dolphins and sea lions. The area's beauty belies the infamous 17th-century shipwreck and mutiny of the Dutch East India company's Batavia that turned an island into a graveyard.

CRUISING THE COAST OF AUSTRALIA

GEM AT THE OCEAN'S EDGE
Welcome to an unspoiled Eden of shimmering turquoise waters and deserted white-sand beaches. Turquoise Bay is a sanctuary in the Ningaloo Marine Park on the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Coast in Western Australia. Here, at the edge of the Indian Ocean, swimmers, snorkelers, and divers witness a variety of marine life, from colorful clown fish, moray eels and sea turtles to gentle whale sharks, dugongs, and humpback whales. Further south is Monkey Mia Beach, a magnet for bottlenose dolphins.

A NATURAL WONDER
Christmas Island was named on Christmas day in 1643 by Captain William Mynors, the master of a passing ship. The island is located approximately 1,600 miles off the northwest coast of Perth, Australia. More than half the island is a national park containing species of flora and fauna found nowhere else in the world. The most noticeable local is the red crab. There are more than 100 million of these vividly hued creatures living on the forest floor. Christmas Island's unique population blends Asian and European influences from the Australian mainland. A visit here is a diverse cultural experience that features numerous temples, local festivals and diverse cuisine.

NATURE'S TREASURE
The World Heritage Site of Ujung Kulon National Park sits at the extreme southwestern tip of Java, in the Banten province of Indonesia. It encompasses the volcanic Krakatau archipelago and other islands in the Sunda Strait, such as Panaitan. Its lush rainforests, pristine beaches, colorful coral reefs, and blue lagoons are the ideal setting for nature treks, snorkeling and kayaking. This remote region is home to a host of endangered flora and fauna.

MOUNTAIN IN THE SEA
In the Sunda Strait between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra lies the Krakatau archipelago, the site of the famous 1883 eruption of the Krakatau volcano (also known as Krakatoa). The explosion and collapse of the volcano triggered a tsunami that devasted surrounding islands. Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatau) is a new volcano that has been active since emerging from the sea in the 1920s. It is part of the UNESCO-protected Ujung Kulon National Park.

VICTORIOUS CITY
One of Asia’s most electrifying urban centers, Jakarta is a sprawling, heavily populated city of almost 10 million people. Famous for its shopping, people come to Jakarta from all over the world to snap up bargains, both in traditional open-air marketplaces and ritzy super malls. The region is particularly known for its batik outlets and factories. Despite being the capital of the world’s largest Islamic country, Jakarta has one of the hippest nightlife scenes in Southeast Asia, with over 200 bars, discos, pubs and upscale lounges spread across the city.
