Tauck Luxury Escorted Tours – Canada’s Capital Cities Plus Niagara Falls
Tauck’s eastern Canada and Niagara Falls vacation explores four eastern Canadian cities with distinctly diverse cultural backgrounds – Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa and Toronto – during stays at premier Fairmont hotels, each a historic landmark in itself, along with visits to Quebec’s Montmorency Falls and Ontario’s Niagara Falls. Special experiences include a cruise among the Thousand Islands of the St. Lawrence River; a close-up look at the thundering waters of Niagara Falls on a cruise aboard the Maid of the Mist; and a private candlelit tour of Ottawa’s historic Laurier House, led by a resident “butler,” for a glimpse inside the lives of two Canadian prime ministers of the past.
Itinerary
| Day 1 | Arrive Montreal
Tour begins: 6:30 PM at Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth. Welcome to Montreal, the second-largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris and the jumping-off point for your eastern Canada and Niagara Falls vacation. A transfer is included from Montreal International Airport to Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth. Meet your Tauck Director and fellow travelers at tonight’s welcome reception and dinner at your landmark hotel in the heart of the city. Meals: Dinner Lodging: Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth, Montreal, PQ |
| Day 2 | Romantic, cultural Montreal
With its dual English and French cultures, Montreal is one of Canada’s most unique – and romantic – cities. A morning sightseeing tour includes McGill University and Mont-Royal, plus a visit to Notre Dame Cathedral. Spend the afternoon as you please – take a stroll through the Botanical Gardens, check out some of the city’s fine museums, or explore fascinating underground Montreal, virtually another city beneath the streets. Meals: Breakfast, lunch Lodging: Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth, Montreal, PQ |
| Day 3 | Montmorency Falls and French Quebec
Depart Montreal and set out through lovely Quebec landscapes along the St. Lawrence River to magnificent Montmorency Falls; at 272 ft., they are higher than Niagara Falls. Have lunch beside the falls before visiting the Shrine of Ste. Anne de Beaupré, then continuing on to the heart of French Canada, Quebec City. Sprawled atop sheer cliffs rising above the narrowing St. Lawrence River, Quebec’s four-century-old provincial capital reflects an old-world charm and grace of another era – and your historic hotel is right in the heart of it all. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner Lodging: Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, Quebec City, PQ |
| Day 4 | Visit the “Old World” in Quebec City
Today, your eastern Canada and Niagara Falls vacation takes you on a sightseeing tour of the hemisphere’s only walled city north of Mexico; this old-world gem recently celebrated its 400th birthday in 2008. With its provincial Parliament buildings, Porte St-Louis, cobbled streets, charming open-air cafés, and ancient stone houses huddled beside venerable churches, old Quebec evokes memories of a typical city of 18th-century Europe. Spend the rest of the day exploring at leisure, enjoying dinner on your own this evening at one of the city’s many fine eateries. Meals: Breakfast Lodging: Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, Quebec City, PQ |
| Day 5 | Mounties and more along the explorers’ route to Ottawa
From Quebec City, travel a route used by early French explorers and fur traders along Quebec’s eastern shores; stop for a guided tour of the stables of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police en route to Canada’s capital city of Ottawa, perched on the banks of the Ottawa River. See Ottawa’s magnificent boulevards and tree-lined streets, beautiful flower gardens, and the regal architecture of its stately government buildings. Spend the next two nights at the landmark Fairmont Château Laurier. Meals: Breakfast, lunch Lodging: Fairmont Château Laurier, Ottawa, ON |
| Day 6 | Ottawa, Canada’s stately Victorian capital
The morning’s sightseeing in resplendent Ottawa includes views of the Royal Canadian Mint, National Research Center, City Hall, the residence of the prime minister, and Rideau Hall, the governor-general’s home, with an opportunity to visit Parliament. Weather permitting, it is possible to see the Changing of the Guard in July and August. Following a late morning visit to the acclaimed Museum of Civilization, discover more of Ottawa on your own this afternoon. Tonight, join Edward, a talkative “butler,” for a candlelit tour of the Laurier House National Historic Site, offering insights on the lives of several of Canada’s prime ministers. Meals: Breakfast, dinner Lodging: Fairmont Château Laurier, Ottawa, ON |
| Day 7 | Cruise the Thousand Islands, and on to Toronto
As your eastern Canada and Niagara Falls vacation continues, head south to the St. Lawrence River for lunch and a cruise among the lovely Thousand Islands, home to both simple summer homes and opulent mansions. Arrive in multi-cultural Toronto; Ontario’s largest city is a dynamic metropolis with a wide variety of ethnic neighborhood villages, a vibrant waterfront, and myriad cultural attractions. A historic landmark in the center of the city, your home for the next three nights was the British Commonwealth’s largest hotel when it opened in 1929. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner Lodging: The Fairmont Royal York, Toronto, ON |
| Day 8 | Everything Toronto
Consistently ranked among the best cities in the world in which to live, Toronto is Canada’s most populous city, as well as its financial, cultural and entertainment capital. Discover it on a sightseeing tour that includes the downtown and residential areas as well as the grand Parliament Buildings and the University of Toronto. Visit one of the city’s most visible icons, the CN Tower, the tallest freestanding structure in the world. The rest of the day is free for you to pursue what interests you most from your historic hotel in the heart of this vibrant city. Meals: Breakfast Lodging: The Fairmont Royal York, Toronto, ON |
| Day 9 | A close-up look at amazing Niagara Falls
Continue your eastern Canada and Niagara Falls vacation by heading from Toronto along the Queen Elizabeth Way to Niagara’s famous falls today. View this natural wonder from high above, then descend to the churning waters of the Niagara River and board the famous Maid of the Mist for a cruise and close-up encounter with the thundering falls. Pass such world-famous sights as Table Rock, the Floral Clock and Whirlpool Rapids on a drive along Niagara Gorge.
