Day 01 Arrive Tokyo

Arrival into the fast moving, neon-lit metropolis of Tokyo and transfer to your hotel.

Day 02 Tokyo

To fit all the attractions in there is an early start as you visit the amazing Tsukiji fish market, the biggest in the world. Other highlights include the Imperial Palace, the Meiji shrine, the vast Asakusa Kannon (Buddhist temple) and the fascinating Edo Tokyo Museum. There is time also for the shops and galleries of the Ginza district and Omotesando Street (B).

Day 03 Tokyo – Nikko National Park – Tokyo

Venture out of the city a few hours north to the mountainous Nikko National Park where there is a fine collection of World Heritage listed gilded shrines and temples set amidst lush woodland. Look out in particular for the fabulous Toshogu Shrine, mausoleum to the first and greatest Tokugawa Shogun. On returning to Tokyo stop at a Bonsai Village to understand a little of the traditional art of miniaturising trees (B).

Day 04 Tokyo – Hakone

The overland journey to Hakone takes you through the seaside town of Kamakura, the 12th century capital, famous for its hidden Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, walking trails and volcanic hot springs. A treat in store this afternoon as you arrive at your ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. Get ready to immerse yourself in the culture: wear the yukata (traditional robe), sample Japanese cuisine, sleep on a futon on tatami mats and soak in onsen (hot spring bath)! (B,D).

Day 05 Hakone

From your ryokan there are marvellous views of Mt. Fuji and today is spent enjoying the scenery and outdoor activities. There is a ropeway ride at Mt. Komagatake, a cruise on Lake Achi, visits to the Owakudani crater and volcanic hot water springs and the Samurai Art Museum (B,D).

Day 06 Hakone– Kyoto

A bullet train ride today from Odawara Station to Kyoto where you transfer to your hotel. The afternoon is at leisure in this charming city, regarded as Japan’s cultural capital (B).

Day 07 Kyoto

A city full of treasures with all the classic Japanese characteristics: raked pebble gardens, red shrine gates, golden temples even the chance for a glimpse of the geisha culture. Touring today includes one of the country’s most famous sights, the Golden Pavilion and an icon of traditional Japanese landscape architecture, the rock garden of Ryoanji Temple dating to the late 1400s. Visit also 17th century Nijo, the castle of the first local shogun and two more of the city’s significant temples (B).

Day 08 Kyoto

A chance this morning to experience Japanese customs first hand when you visit a private home for a traditional tea ceremony. In time-honoured fashion, wear a kimono and obi as you join your gracious hostess for the unique ritual. There is also a calligraphy demonstration before visiting the Uzumasa Movie Studio where a collection of Japanese buildings are used as sets for historical movies and TV dramas providing an interesting glimpse into elements of Japan’s architectural history. Finish your day at the Kiyomizu Pottery Sannenzaka Museum which specialises in Japanese fine arts from the late 15th to early 20th century (B).

Day 09 Kyoto – Osaka

Travel a short distance today to Nara, Japan’s capital in the 8th century. Today it is a lovely compact collection of interesting historic sites and cultural attractions. See the Todaiji Temple with the country’s largest bronze buddha and surrounding deer park. Continue to the Kasuga Shrine, founded in the 8th century with a charming woodland setting and resident herds of sacred deer. Finally the World Heritage listed Horyuji Temple, Japan’s oldest, which houses some of the country’s rarest treasures. Continue to Osaka for your final night (B).

Day 10 Depart Osaka

Say ‘sayonara’ to Japan as you transfer to the airport (B).
