DEPARTURE TIME & POINT
This tour departs daily (except during New Year’s and Rio Carnival) from Rio de Janeiro Airport

Itinerary

Day 1     Arrive Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is nestled between the mountains and the sea.  Rio is such an extraordinary city that its visitors are impressed at first sight by the climate and the striking landscape. From the sun-drenched beauty of its white sandy beaches to the generous hospitality of the “Cariocas” (as the town’s natives are called), Rio offers a combination that is hard to match. It is not only a beach resort combining tropical beauty and mountain views, but a sophisticated city as well.  Met on arrival by our representative from Rentamar for a private transfer to your hotel. Overnight Rio de Janeiro.
Day 2     Rio de Janeiro
8am hotel pick up for a full day private tour of this amazing city. First stop is a visit to the Christ the Redeemer statue, standing on top of Corcovado Mountain (2,300 feet above sea level). To get there, we will drive through the Laranjeiras residential district and the quaint Cosme Velho to the Corcovado train station, where you will board a cogwheel train for a 15-minute ride that crosses Tijuca forest – the largest urban forest in the world. It has 8,000 acres of tropical rain forest right in the middle of Rio de Janeiro. Once on the mountaintop, you will be amazed with the construction of the statue, that consists of 120 feet of concrete and soapstone above the spectacular 360° view over the city. The return itinerary will take you through the Rebouças Tunnel, which leads to the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, a mirror lake bordered by residential buildings and gracious mansions, rolling, green hills and exotic gardens. Lunch will be served at a buffet restaurant, including traditional Brazilian BBQ.

After lunch we will visit Sugar Loaf Mountain for superb views over the city and bay. Starting at the hotel, you will drive along famous beaches, such as Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana and Leme, reaching Praia Vermelha or Red Beach, in the Urca district. There, a cable car ascent is made in two stages toward the top of the Sugar Loaf Mountain. It will take three minutes to reach the first stage, the Urca mountain., where the gardens and sightseeing view will invite you to enjoy this midway stop before proceeding to the peak; where the crescent of the Atlantic ocean beaches comes fully into view and you will be amazed and certain of the city’s beauty. The return trip will be through Flamengo Park and there will also be a stop at the famous New Cathedral downtown. Drop off at hotel around 5pm. Overnight Rio de Janeiro.

Day 3     Rio de Janeiro
Day at leisure. We suggest one of our optional tours on page 18 of the Latin America brochure, and recommend that you book prior to departure from Australia.
Day 4     Depart Rio de Janeiro
After breakfast, you will be met in the lobby of your hotel at a pre-arranged time for a private transfer to the airport. Tour concludes.

Favela Jeep Tour

This unique tour of one of the famed favelas in Rio de Janeiro offers travelers a glimpse into a side of Rio that visitors rarely get to experience. Santa Marta is one of the first communities in a program designed to welcome tourists to the favelas; poor but culturally vibrant neighborhoods where a strong sense of community has inspired a long tradition of music and art.

Santa Marta is located on Dona Marta Hill, officially part of Botafogo, in Rio de Janeiro. The residents refer to the district as Santa Marta because of the image of the saint which has adorned the inside of the chapel at the top of the hill since the beginning of the twentieth century.

Believe it or not, you may have already had a quick view of this neighborhood if you saw Michael Jackson’s music video for They Don’t Care About Us, meant to draw international attention to the residents of these communities. There are plans to build a statue of the famous pop star in one of the places he used for filming, Beco do Curió, beside the church of Assembly of God on the terrace of the district’s Culture House.

On this three hour tour, you will be picked up from your hotel by jeep, and driven to the neighborhood. From here you will stop at the elevator turret and see the place where Michael Jackson filmed, before walking through the streets to the residents’ association. On your way back to your hotel, the driver will take a picturesque route near the Lagoon.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
If you have booked extra nights in Rio de Janeiro , departure transfer will be provided at the end of your stay.
The order of sightseeing tours may change due to unforeseen circumstances and will be at the discretion of the tour operator.
