Day 4 Tue. Upolu Cay, Barrier Reef
Today you will discover the incredible beauty of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. Stretching for over 1,250 miles, the Great Barrier Reef is visible from outer space and is composed of more than 2,800 individual reefs. Spend an unforgettable day at the magnificent Upolu Cay and reef edge. Swim, snorkel or join the glass-bottom boat to view the brilliantly colored coral, giant clams, tropical fish and other marine life. You’ll also enjoy a delicious tropical lunch while on board.

Day 5 Wed. At Leisure in Cairns
Today is free for you to explore Queensland’s tropical north as you choose. Perhaps take an optional tour to Kuranda, a village deep in the heart of the rain forest. Here you have the opportunity to ride the Skyrail Cableway over the rain forest, visit the local markets or embark on a journey aboard the Kuranda Scenic Railway – passing over 40 bridges, tropical rain forest, rushing waterfalls and traveling through 15 tunnels (all at own expense).

Spend the morning at Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park. Meet and interact with the Tjapukai people as they demonstrate their ancient skills and knowledge of the natural world. This afternoon board your flight for Sydney, Australia’s largest city.

Today is yours to enjoy at leisure in Sydney. As night falls, we enjoy the sophistication of a Moscow evening as we take dinner in one of the city’s many restaurants. Day 3. Vladimir and Suzdal
Today we visit the historic city of Vladimir. Founded in 990, it is one of the Russia’s oldest communities with an architectural wealth and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our tour takes in Uspensky Cathedral, built between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. It is considered one of the most important and beautiful of Russian cathedrals, where many of the prominent Russian Tsars were crowned. Our excursion moves on to the pastoral town of Suzdal, one of Russia’s most perfectly preserved walled cities dating back to 1024. Here we visit the atmospheric St Euthymius Monastery to witness an enchanting choral performance by the resident monks. No Russian winter experience would be complete without a romantic Troika Sledge Ride. There really is no more exhilarating way to travel across Russia’s snowbound landscapes. Day 4. Yekaterinburg, Russia (Capital of the Urals)
We cross the Europe/Asia divide before arriving in the historic city of Yekaterinburg. Founded in 1723 by Peter the Great, this third largest Russian city is also the capital of the Urals. Our city tour takes us to the execution site where the Romanov, Nicholas II of Russia was executed with his family by the Bolsheviks in 1918. Now a church dedicated to their memory, this site offers us with a powerful insight into the turmoil of the Russian Revolution.

Day 5. Novosibirsk, Russia
A modern ‘Soviet’ city, we experience the life and character of Novosibirsk’s rich culture where the arts, science and literature predominate. Our city tour takes us to the Opera House. An architectural marvel, it houses two permanent ballet and opera companies and is the largest opera house in the world. In front of the Opera House, we visit an imposing statue of Lenin – a marvellous opportunity to have your photograph taken with this iconic political leader.

A day to unwind and reflect on the many sights and sounds we have experienced on our journey so far. Chat to your fellow passengers, perhaps learn a few words of Russian or simply enjoy the ever changing landscape outside your window as it unfolds.

Day 7. Irkutsk, Siberia
We arrive in Irkutsk, the ‘Paris of Siberia’, and our visit today takes in the most significant sites and museums in this city, including an exploration of the classic wooden architecture that has given many of this region’s buildings such a distinctive and unique appearance. Next, we visit the Decembrist House museum which is dedicated to the memory of the exiled aristocrats who were forced to flee to this remote outpost after the failed revolution of 1825. We will enjoy a private concert before leaving for the enchanting wooded encampment of Zaimka (Hunters Lodge) where we will be met by local women dressed in traditional costume. We then have the opportunity to explore a Banya (Russian Sauna) in one of the region’s authentic wooden houses. Drinks and traditional food can then be enjoyed within a series of the cosy timber houses before we return to our train to enjoy dinner.

Day 8. Lake Baikal, Siberia
Few natural sights can surpass the beauty and grandeur of Lake Baikal. For five hours we wind our way through tunnels along cliff hugging tracks above the frozen lake with a vista of snow capped peaks along the far shore forming a picture-perfect backdrop. Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world and holds 20% of the world’s freshwater. Also known as the ‘Pearl of Siberia’ it is home to a unique breed of freshwater seal and over fifty species of fish including omul which we will be serving in the dining car for some of our meals. Frozen in winter, Lake Baikal is the perfect location to experience the thrill of an ice ride. You will have the choice of taking an exciting snowmobile ride or experience a Dog Troika Ride taken at a slightly more sedate pace. Either way you will enjoy the perfect vantage point to appreciate the magnificence of this unspoilt location. Also there is the opportunity to try under-ice fishing and the freshly caught fish are then smoked in a mobile smokehouse and served warm with ice-cold vodka. Delicious.

Day 9. Ulan Baatar, Mongolia
Our Trans-Siberian adventure takes us onto Ulaan Baatar, the capital of Mongolia. Passing the central monument to Genghis Khan, undoubtedly the most feared and infamous Mongol, we visit the National Museum where we explore the country’s fascinating history. Lunch is taken Mongol style, in a traditional Ger (Yurt) restaurant where we experience an authentic meal, enjoying excellent local dishes and entertainment providing a unique opportunity to encounter this time-honoured nomadic way of life. You are free to spend your afternoon shopping for traditional Mongolian gifts or there is the option to drive through Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. We board the train in time for dinner as we head back into Russia.

After travelling through 8 time zones and over an amazing 6,600 miles (10,600km) along this epic route to the end of the Trans-Siberian line, the Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express pulls into Vladivostok, a military port located on the western shores of the Sea of Japan. Vladivostok (literally meaning ‘Ruler of the East’) offers visitors an exciting opportunity to explore its principal military attractions including a tour of a restored submarine before we transfer to the centrally located four-star Hotel Hyundai. Day 1. Embark MS La Marguerite Cruise
Travel to Tonle Sap Lake and embark on your Mekong River Cruise. Enjoy your Welcome Dinner as you cruise to Kampong Chhnang.

Day 2. Kampong Chhnang – Kampong Cham
After breakfast, enjoy a motor boat excursion into the lakeside wetlands that form the mouth of the Tonle Sap River. Enjoy a stunning variety of birdlife, and observe numerous great fish traps, some over a half mile long. Later, the ship enters the jungle as the river narrows. Temples abound along the riverbanks, offering a unique opportunity to observe the rich tapestry of Cambodian rural life. Arrive in the capital city of Phnom Penh in the afternoon, and enter the Upper Mekong bound for Kampong Cham. The ship makes an afternoon stop, in time for a walk through the quaint silk-weaving village of Chong Kho. Overnight, the ship moors mid-stream in Kampong Cham.

Day 3. Kampong Cham – Phnom Penh
This morning, journey upriver to the hilltop pre-Angkorian temple of Wat Hanchey. Over lunch, sail back downstream to explore the Kampong Cham area. Travel to the 12th century Angkorian temple of Wat Nokor, which has been “fused” with a modern Wat. Continue to the Eco village of Cheung Kok. The ship departs late in the afternoon from Kampong Cham, arriving at Phnom Penh for an overnight mid-stream mooring

Day 4. Phnom Penh
Early morning, the ship cruises into spectacular Phnom Penh and docks at the passenger port terminal. A morning tour explores the highlights of Cambodia’s capital city, famous for its French colonial architecture, busy cafes, vibrant nightlife and renovated river “corniche.” Visit the Royal Palace and the spectacular Silver Pagoda. The National Museum is another highlight, with outstanding displays of Khmer crafts. After lunch onboard, another excursion leads to the infamous Killing Fields and the Khmer Rouge’s grim Tuol Sleng or S21 Detention Center (Genocide Museum) situated in the suburbs of the city. An overnight on the waterfront provides an opportunity to dine in one of many nearby restaurants, and experience Phnom Penh’s vibrant nightlife.

Day 5. Phnom Penh – Border Crossing – Tan Chau, Vietnam
Spend the day cruising the Mekong River, stopping at the jungle village of Preak Dach to visit fruit orchards before continuing to the Cambodian/Vietnamese border. The ship moors overnight mid-stream in Tan Chau.

Day 6. Tan Chau – Sa Dec
After breakfast, transfer via small boats to the pier, where a trishaw awaits to transport you around Tan Chau. Visit a mat-making workshop and silk-coloring workshop. Back at the pier, embark on a local boat for a channel cruise and visit to a fish farm before returning to the ship. Overnight mid-stream on the Mekong near Sa Dec.

Day 7. Sa Dec – Cai Be – Ho Chi Minh City
After breakfast, board small local boats for the village of Sa Dec, where you will enjoy a morning stroll. Noteworthy as the town where the French writer Marguerite Duras spent some of her childhood, Sa Dec is a sprawling town on the Mekong Delta. Visit the house of Mr. Huynh Thuy Le, Duras’ Chinese paramour, which is now a small museum. After lunch onboard, the ship continues cruising to Cai Be. A local Junk trip in the afternoon will take you to Cai Be’s spectacular floating market; then go ashore to see the French Gothic Cathedral and visit delightful flower gardens, ancient Kiet

Day 8. Ho Chi Minh City, Disembark Cruise
In the early morning, the ship docks at the Saigon River Frontage. As the capital of the French colony of Cochinchina, Saigon was known as “Paris of the Orient.” Today, Vietnam’s largest city is an industrial, cultural and educational hub, but still retains vestiges of its colonial past.
