Itinerary

Day 1: AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND (EMBARKATION).
Welcome to Amsterdam! Holland’s capital is sophisticated and modern, with a rich and fascinating history. The works of famous Dutch masters can be seen in worldrenowned museums such as the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh. This afternoon, the crew of your vessel awaits to welcome you aboard.

Day 2: AMSTERDAM.
There is no better way to see the city than by CANAL BOAT, cruising through the elegant grachten lined with stately homes dating back to Amsterdam’s “Golden Age”. There is plenty of free time to explore on your own. Your Cruise Director will have suggestions of how to make the most of your stay.

Day 3: GOUDA – DORDRECHT.
The Netherlands and cheese – a winning combination. Gouda, located at the confluence of the Ijssel and Gouwe Rivers, is famous not only for its cheese but also for the 70 stained glass windows in ST. JOHN’S CHURCH. After visiting the town with a local expert, time to stroll through the little lanes or to have a cup of coffee alongside one of its canals. After lunch we cruise through the busy HARBOUR of Rotterdam. Sitting between two branches of the Rhine, charming Dordrecht inspired many painters in the 17th and 18th centuries. Nearby is KINDERDIJK with its picturesque row of windmills.

Day 4: ANTWERP, BELGIUM.
Antwerp is Belgium’s second largest city and one of the world’s most important ancient seaports. Included sightseeing shows you its superb architecture, the GROTE MARKT with its beautiful city hall, and the Church of Our Lady.

Day 5: MAASTRICHT, HOLLAND.
Once prized for its strategic location at the confines of Belgium and Germany, Maastricht is now the bustling cosmopolitan capital of the province of Limburg. The town is quite distinct from the rest of the country with its bustling pedestrian precincts, squares with sprawling cafe terraces, almost Mediterranean atmosphere, Mosan-type stone houses, and its rolling hinterland. A university town since 1976, Maastricht has five faculties and boasts a student population of around 7,000. As we start sailing down the Maas River this afternoon, you might want to join an optional excursion across the border to Germany for a visit of Aachen, ancient seat of Charles the Great.

maastricht

Day 6: ARNHEM.
One of the major tragedies of World War II was the Battle of Arnhem, inspiration for the movie “A Bridge Too Far”. Due to reconstruction of the Airborne Museum Hartenstein we offer a visit to the LIBERTY PARK in Overloon, the DUTCH NATIONAL WAR AND RESISTANCE MUSEUM, where the history of World War II is presented. A visit to the American War Cemetery near Nijmegen is available after lunch. Tonight, sail into Germany.

Day 7: COLOGNE, GERMANY.
Cologne is the capital of the Rhineland and one of Germany’s largest cities. The soaring twin steeples of the magnificent gothic cathedral dominate the river skyline, and the Germano-Roman Museum next to the cathedral is a must for history buffs! The Old Town abounds with taverns, cafes, and shops. Try a Kolsch, the favourite local beer, and shop for a bottle of 4711, the original “eau de cologne”.

Day 8: KOBLENZ – RHINE GORGE – RUDESHEIM.
Situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, 2,000-year-old Koblenz is the cultural and business centre of the Middle Rhine region. The DEUTSCHES ECK, located on a tongue of land where the two rivers converge, holds an impressive equestrian statue of Wilhelm I. The dramatic RHINE GORGE is the most beautiful stretch of river. Pass the legendary rock of the Lorelei, where sweet songs of local beauties lured enchanted sailors to their doom. Rudesheim is the perfect example of a Rhine Valley wine town and SIEGFRIED’S MECHANICAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MUSEUM is a real surprise! A SPECIAL TREAT is planned, then time to explore the Drosselgasse and pick up some souvenirs.

Day 9: COCHEM.
Today we sail up the Moselle River, which rises in the Vosges Mountains of northeastern France and enters Germany at Trier. Visit Cochem’s REICHSBURG CASTLE, which sits atop a conical hill covered in vines. From here the views of the little town nestled down below and of the river valley are splendid. Cruising the wide, peaceful curves of the river, it quickly becomes obvious that the Moselle is an important wine-growing region. Most notably, the Riesling grape is cultivated, producing a dry to sweet, floral white wine.

Day 10: BERNKASTEL.
In the middle of the Moselle region is the charming wine village of Bernkastel with its well-preserved half-timbered houses surrounding the beautiful MARKET PLACE. Wine growers in this area look after Germany’s largest expanse of vineyards, the most celebrated of the vintages being the Bernkastel Doktor. Before dinner, visit a local WINE CELLAR and taste several of this region’s varietals.

bernkastel

Day 11: TRIER – REMICH, LUXEMBOURG.
The venerable Episcopal city of Trier is the oldest in Germany and, some claim, even older than Rome! A house on the marketplace bears the inscription, “Trier was standing 1,300 years before Rome”. The famous PORTA NIGRA is the only surviving fortified gate from the original Roman settlement and it still gives access to the town centre. Trier’s most famous son was socialist revolutionary Karl Marx. This afternoon, cruise to Remich in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Day 12: REMICH (DISEMBARKATION) – PARIS, FRANCE.
After breakfast, transfer to Metz to board the TGV HIGH-SPEED TRAIN for a swift and comfortable journey to Paris.

Day 13: PARIS.
Paris’ famous sights are living history: your included city sightseeing shows you magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral, the unique Louvre Museum with its glass pyramid as a contrast to its ancient architecture, the commemorative Arc de Triomphe, Opera, Madeleine, Champs Elysees, and the Eiffel Tower, a structural miracle of its age. The city is well known for its perful nightlife including some of the world’s most famous cabarets.

Day 14: PARIS.
Your holiday ends with breakfast this morning.

After breakfast, drive south past the forest of Fontainebleau, favourite hunting grounds of a long line of French kings, and into Burgundy. Beaune, the unofficial capital of the Cote d’Or area – which produces the region’s finest vintages – owes its wealth to the production, aging, and selling of fine wines. Its most famous historical site, the Hotel-Dieu charity hospital, houses Van der Weyden’s painting of the Last Judgement and is one of France’s architectural highlights. Enjoy a TASTING of Burgundy wines before continuing south to Chalon-sur-Saone, where the crew of your luxurious river cruise vessel awaits to welcome you on board. Before dinner, set sail for Tournus.

Day 4: TOURNUS – MACON.
Free time to explore the lovely town of Tournus. The cloister of St. Philibert or the folklore collection of the Burgundy Museum, located in an old family mansion, are worth a visit. Sail to Macon for a guided walking tour of this lovely town on the River Saone. Playing an important role in the wine trade, Macon has a rich history. See the OLD SAINT VINCENT, the cathedral founded in the 6th century and now a symbol of the city; La Charite; the Town Hall; and the Half-Timbered House, dating from the 15th to 16th centuries. A number of optional excursions, including a visit to a wine cellar, are available.

Day 5: BEAUJOLAIS REGION – LYON.
Enjoy a leisurely morning cruising on the Rhone. Lyon is France’s second-largest city and its gastronomic capital. Founded by the Romans in 43 BC, the city’s prosperity dates back to the 16th century and is due to commercial, industrial, and banking activities. Roman remains, many excellent museums, and much renaissance architecture delight the visitor. Survey the city from FOURVIERE HILL and explore the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its maze of medieval alleyways, Place Terraux, and the beautiful Place Bellecour. Beaujolais is the wine of the region and wine connoisseurs will know that the grapes must be hand picked. Tradition dictates that the “Beaujolais Nouveau” is tasted for the first time on the third Thursday of November each year. An optional dinner gives gourmets insight into the local haute cuisine.

Day 6: LYON.
A free day in this fascinating city to explore at leisure. Early risers might like to visit the local produce market. Your Cruise Director will have plenty of suggestions for things to do.

lyon

Day 7: TOURNON – TAIN L’HERMITAGE – VIVIERS.
The twin cities of Tournon and Tain L’Hermitage lie nestled among vineyards between the Rhone River and the granite slopes of the Hermitage. Tournon, with its imposing 16th-century castle and Roman ruins, is one of France’s oldest medieval cities. Another charming town, Viviers, was developed around its ROMANESQUE CATHEDRAL, and the OLD TOWN has an appealing mix of Christian, Roman, and medieval influences.

Day 8: AVIGNON.
The fortified city of Avignon is the capital of the Vaucluse region, the most picturesque part of Provence. Also referred to as the “City of Popes,” it was the centre of the Catholic Church in the 14th century, and the city landscape is dominated by the grandiose PALACE OF THE POPES. A photo of the bridge of the popular song is a must, and optional outings to Pont du Gard or to the famed wine cellars of Chateauneuf-du-Pape are available this afternoon.

Day 9: ARLES.
On the northern tip of the Camargue, Arles is the capital of the Provence and was once known as the “Little Rome of Gaul”. See the ROMAN AMPHITHEATRE, the church of St. Trophime, and “Les Alyscamps”, the remains of the Gallo-Roman burial road. Vincent Van Gogh was inspired by the special light of the Provence and spent a very productive year in Arles. The “Foundation Vincent Van Gogh” is a tribute to the artist.

Day 10: ARLES (DISEMBARKATION) – NICE.
After breakfast, transfer by motorcoach along the Cote d’Azur to Nice. Day 1: AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND (EMBARKATION).

Day 2: AMSTERDAM.
There is no better way to see Amsterdam than by CANAL BOAT, cruising through the elegant grachten lined with stately homes dating back to Amsterdam’s “Golden Age”. This afternoon, there is time to explore or perhaps join an optional excursion to a nearby picturesque small town before your ship sets sail for Cologne.

Day 3: COLOGNE, GERMANY.
Cologne is one of Germany’s largest cities, with a river skyline dominated by the soaring twin spires of its magnificent gothic cathedral. The Germano-Roman Museum next to the cathedral is a must for history buffs! Try a Kolsch in one of the many taverns and shop for a bottle of 4711, the original “eau de cologne”.

Day 4: RHINE GORGE – RUDESHEIM.
The dramatic RHINE GORGE is the most beautiful stretch of river. Pass the legendary rock of the Lorelei, where sweet songs of local beauties lured enchanted sailors to their doom. Visit SIEGFRIED’S MECHANICAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MUSEUM in pretty Rudesheim. A SPECIAL TREAT is planned, then free time to explore the Drosselgasse and pick up some souvenirs.

Day 5: MILTENBERG.
Located on the Main River, Miltenberg is a picturesque Bavarian village that thrived on income from river traffic. Its cultural wealth and affluence are reflected in the beautiful medieval and renaissance houses and the gothic splendour of the Merchant Hall. This afternoon, learn how to bake a local soft cookie specialty.

Day 6: WURZBURG.
Known as the “Pearl of the Romantic Road”, Wurzburg is surrounded by sloping hills covered with vineyards. The magnificent BISHOP’S RESIDENZ is another UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 7: BAMBERG.
Another beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site is medieval Bamberg. Your walking tour takes in its breathtaking cathedral, the OLD TOWN HALL straddling the River Regnitz, and serpentine streets with charming houses and 18th-century mansions.

Day 8: NUREMBERG.
Although Nuremberg suffered extensive damage during WWII, much of it was restored to its original style. Marvel at this historic city with its fabulous gothic churches and elegant patrician houses-all explained by a local expert. Nuremberg’s traditions include famous Lebkuchen, toy making, and metal working. After dinner we’ll introduce you to some of Germany’s famous beers!

Day 9: REGENSBURG.
Regensburg is one of Germany’s best preserved medieval cities. Architectural highlights on your guided tour include the Old Town Hall, the beautiful white and gold OLD CHAPEL, and Porta Pretoria-gates to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 AD. The city is the capital of Upper Palatinate, a bustling university town, and one of Bavaria’s cultural centres. It is here you will find Germany’s oldest restaurant, the 12th-century Historische Wurstkuche (Old Sausage Kitchen).

Day 10: PASSAU.
Passau, ideally located at the confluence of the Rivers Inn, Ilz, and Danube, is a city of graceful arcades and cobblestone streets. St. Stephen’s Cathedral houses the world’s largest church organ with more than 17,000 pipes.

Day 11: GREIN, AUSTRIA – MELK.
At the foot of a bluff in the shadow of its castle, Grein’s turreted houses on the main square offer excellent photo opportunities. Situated in the picturesque Wachau Valley, Melk is home to the magnificent BENEDICTINE ABBEY that dominates the town and is one of Europe’s largest monasteries. The view from the terrace over the Danube and surrounding countryside is breathtaking!

Day 12: VIENNA.
Vienna, Austria’s capital, is known as the “City of Music” and inspired the creative genius of Mozart, Beethoven, and Strauss. Once the centre of the mighty Habsburg Empire, the city has much to offer: the lavish Hofburg Palace, the impressive Vienna Opera House, the majestic Ring Boulevard, and awe-inspiring St. Stephen’s Cathedral, to name just a few of the sights you will enjoy during your included tour. You do not rush through Vienna; you waltz, taking your time to savour each classic sight and sound. Shop in the Karntnerstrasse and enjoy Sachertorte or Apfelstrudel in a neighbourhood cafe. An optional concert is available during your stay.

Day 13: VIENNA (DISEMBARKATION).
Your holiday ends with breakfast this morning.
