17 day Imperial China and Hong Kong Tour

Discover the wonders of China and Hong Kong on this 17 Day odyssey. Explore the Forbidden City and Beijing’s famous sights, then embark on a four night cruise of the Yangtze River. Itinerary

Day 1. Beijing

Upon arrival be met and transferred to your hotel. This evening enjoy a Welcome Reception and meet your Tour Director.

Three Night Stay: Grand Hotel Beijing

Day 2. Beijing Sightseeing

This morning visit the Forbidden City, former residence of 24 Chinese Emperors from 1420 to1924. Entrance to the former Imperial Palace was once denied to the public, but today gates allow access to what is probably the best-preserved site of classical Chinese architecture. Visit the Imperial Summer Palace, built for the Empress Dowager Cixi. This evening enjoy a Peking Duck banquet with all the traditional accompaniments.

Day 3. Great Wall of China

Today’s highlight is your visit to the Great Wall of China, which winds its way from the Yellow Sea up into the Gobi Desert for over 6,000 kilometres. Visit a jade factory before reaching the Great Wall at Badaling. In the afternoon, visit the Changling Tomb of the 13 Ming Tombs before returning to Beijing. The rest of this evening is then yours to spend at leisure.

Day 4. Yichang, Embark Cruise

This morning tour Tian’anmen Square. After lunch, fly from Beijing to Yichang, where your four night Yangtze River Cruise begins. Board your luxury river ship and this evening enjoy a delicious buffet dinner on board.

Day 5. Three Gorges Dam Site, Xiling Gorge

This morning, stop at Sandouping to visit the Three Gorges Dam project site. After lunch on board, cruise through the fascinating step locks. Later, you will cruise through Xiling Gorge, known for its many smaller gorges, caves and rock formations.

Day 6. Small Gorges, Wu Gorge, Qutang Gorge

Today you’ll take an intriguing excursion through the Small Gorges, which are narrower than the Three Gorges, but equally as impressive. Enter Wu Gorge, known for its quiet beauty, forest-covered mountains and cliffs so sheer that the sunlight barely penetrates the precipices. Then cruise through Qutang Gorge – the shortest (at 8 kilometres), narrowest (at 152 metres) and most dramatic gorge.

Day 7. Fengdu or Shibaozhai

This afternoon, tour the 12-storey red pavilion, Shibaozhai Temple. Set on the hillside above the Yangtze River, this amazing piece of Chinese architecture was built during the Qing Dynasty. Otherwise your cruise will take you to Fengdu, known as the Ghost City, for its gardens, temples and statues of ghosts and devils.

Day 8. Chongqing, Xi’an

This morning after breakfast, disembark your cruise in Chongqing, a strategic port since ancient times. Enjoy an authentic hotpot lunch then head for the Chongqing Zoo, where Giant Pandas await. Following your visit fly to historic Xi’an.

Day 9. Terracotta Warriors

Travel via a clay factory, where replica Terracotta Warriors are made, to the Terracotta Warriors themselves. In 1974, peasants uncovered these life-size figures of individually modelled horses and warriors. After lunch, explore the world-famous Terracotta Warriors Museum, take in a movie detailing the history of the warriors and visit the three excavation pits. Tonight enjoy a Tang Dynasty singing and dancing show with a special dumpling banquet.

Day 10. Xi’an, Shanghai

This morning take a Xi’an city wall tour. Then fly to Shanghai, where you’ll be transferred to your hotel, located on Nanjing Road in Shanghai’s shopping district.

Day 11. Shanghai Sightseeing

This morning, stroll on the Bund before visiting the Shanghai Art Museum with its five floors of display rooms featuring themes such as jade, bronze and paintings. Tonight, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, followed by an acrobatic show.

Day 12. Suzhou

This morning after breakfast, travel to the canal and garden city of Suzhou, where you’ll visit a silk factory to learn about the silk producing procedure. Then return to Shanghai this evening.

Day 13. Shanghai, Guilin

This morning is yours to enjoy at leisure before transferring to Shanghai airport in the afternoon for your flight to Guilin. On arrival, transfer to your hotel, located near the pretty Li River.

Day 14. Li River Cruise

An inspiration to poets and artists alike, the area around Guilin will not fail to enchant you. Cruise along tranquil Li River to Yangshou. Pass picturesque villages, watch farmers at work and fishermen float by on bamboo rafts. After lunch on board, visit the village of Yangshou, then return to Guilin for a dinner of the famous local rice noodles.

Day 15. Reed Flute Cave, Hong Kong

After breakfast, tour the Reed Flute Cave, named after the reeds growing outside that are used for making flutes. Afterwards, visit Fubo Hill before transferring to the airport for your flight to the exciting cosmopolitan port city of Hong Kong.

Day 16. Hong Kong Sightseeing

Enjoy a guided tour of Hong Kong. Take a tram ride up to the top of Victoria Peak for stunning views of Hong Kong, and explore Repulse Bay, a beach haven in the heart of the city. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure and this evening, visit Aberdeen’s colourful harbour area for a special Farewell Dinner at Top Deck, a unique restaurant and bar on the top floor of Hong Kong’s legendary Jumbo Floating Restaurant.
