15 day Roof of the World – China and Tibet

Journey to the roof of the world on this 15 Day adventure into the heart of China. Explore historic Beijing before flying to Xi’an – the start of Silk Road and home of the famous Terracotta Warriors. From there travel to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet and known as the spiritual home of the Dalai Lama. Then enjoy with a relaxing cruise on the Yangtze River and spend three amazing nights in Shanghai.

Itinerary

Day 1. Beijing

Upon arrival be met and transferred to your hotel. This evening enjoy a Welcome Reception and meet your Tour Director.

Day 2. Beijing Sightseeing

This morning following breakfast, visit the Forbidden City, former residence of 24 Chinese Emperors from 1420 to 1924. Entrance to the former Imperial Palace was once denied to the public, but today gates allow access to what is probably the best-preserved site of classical Chinese architecture. Visit the Imperial Summer Palace, built for the Empress Dowager Cixi. This evening enjoy a Peking Duck banquet with all the traditional accompaniments.

Day 3. Great Wall of China

Today’s highlight is your visit to the Great Wall of China, which winds its way from the Yellow Sea up into the Gobi Desert for over 6,000 kilometres. Visit a jade factory before reaching the Great Wall at Badaling. In the afternoon, visit the Changling Tomb of the 13 Ming Tombs before returning to Beijing. The rest of this evening is yours to spend at leisure.

Day 4. Beijing, Lhasa

This morning fly to Tibet’s capital, Lhasa, located at the foot of Mt Gephel, 3,200 metres above sea level. The spiritual home of the Dalai Lama, Lhasa is also the economic and cultural centre of the country. After lunch, the afternoon is at leisure so that you may adjust to the high altitude. Dinner this evening is at the hotel.

Day 5. Potala Palace

Today your touring takes you to 1,300 year-old Jokhang Temple as well as the amazing Potala Palace. After a local lunch, explore the maze like Barkhor Market in Old Lhasa and take in the intriguing variety of colourful sights. Dinner this evening is at leisure so that you may discover the local cuisine as you wish.

Day 6. Lhasa Sightseeing

This morning visit Sera Monastery and Norbulinka Palace. You might also like to take an optional tour to Tibet Museum (own expense). Today you’ll enjoy lunch and dinner in a local restaurant.

Day 7. Lhasa, Chongqing, Embark Cruise

Following breakfast, transfer to the airport for your short flight to Chongqing, a gateway to the Three Gorges and a strategic port since ancient times. On arrival, head for Chongqing Zoo, where you’ll enjoy the opportunity to see the Giant Pandas. After an authentic hotpot lunch, embark your deluxe river cruise ship, the Victoria Jenna, for a luxurious three night Yangtze River Cruise. After settling in, enjoy a delicious dinner on board tonight.

Day 8. Fengdu or Shibaozhai

This afternoon, tour the 12 storey red pavilion, Shibaozhai Temple. Set on the hillside above the Yangtze River, this amazing piece of Chinese architecture was built during the Qing Dynasty. Otherwise our cruise will take us to Fengdu, known as the Ghost City for its gardens temples and statues of ghosts and devils.

Day 9. Small Gorges, Wu Gorge, Qutang Gorge, Three Gorges Dam

Take an excursion through the Small Gorges, which are narrower than the Three Gorges, but equally as impressive. Enter Wu Gorge, known for its quiet beauty, forest-covered mountains and cliffs so sheer that the sun barely penetrates the precipices. Then cruise through dramatic Qutang Gorge. In the evening sail through the Three Gorges Dam ship lock.

Day 10. Three Gorges Dam Site

After breakfast, visit the Three Gorges Dam project site. One of the biggest construction projects ever undertaken, the Three Gorges Dam will forever change the face of the Yangtze River. After lunch, disembark the ship and fly to Xi’an, then transfer to your hotel. Tonight enjoy a Tang Dynasty singing and dancing show with a special dumpling banquet.

Day 11. Terracotta Warriors

Travel via a clay factory, where replica Terracotta Warriors are made, to the Terracotta Warriors. In 1974, peasants uncovered these life-size figures of individually modelled horses and warriors. After lunch, explore the famous Terracotta Warriors Museum, watch a movie on the history of the warriors and visit the three excavation pits.

Day 12. Xi’an Sightseeing

This morning join a guided tour of this historical city, including the ancient city wall. In the afternoon, transfer to the airport and board your flight to Shanghai.

Day 13. Shanghai Sightseeing

Today you’ll enjoy a full day to explore Shanghai. Visit the Shanghai Art Museum then, after lunch at a local restaurant, visit a cashmere factory before exploring the beautiful Yu Garden and its surrounding old town. Tonight enjoy dinner at a local restaurant then take a stroll on the Bund and enjoy a fantastic acrobatic show.

Day 14. Zhujiajiao, Suzhou

Travel to the canal and garden city of Suzhou, stopping on the way in the village of Zhujiajiao for a boat ride on the canals. On arrival in Suzhou, visit a silk factory to learn about the silk producing procedure. This evening, dinner is at the hotel.

Day 15. Shanghai
