This morning we explore the birthplace of democracy and enjoy a guided tour of the Acropolis, whose famous Parthenon dates to the 5th century B.C. We also see amongst other buildings the Propylaea, the majestic gates of the complex. SCENICENRICH This afternoon we journey to Cape Sounion and visit the Sanctuary of Poseidon, where we admire stunning views of the Aegean Sea. Later we’ll enjoy a fabulous dinner at a seaside restaurant that offers unsurpassed water views.

Day 3: Athens – Olympia (FB,L,D)
Our first stop today will be the city of Mycenae, famous for its remarkable pottery. We continue to Nafplion, a delightful seaside town and first capital of modern Greece. Our journey continues to Olympia, where tonight’s accommodation is set in a prime location.

Day 4: Olympia – Delphi (FB,D)
Today we visit the ruins at Olympia, site of the ancient games from at least 776 B.C. We depart Olympia and cross the Corinthian Gulf either by ferry or over the tallest hanging bridge in the world. SCENICENRICH This afternoon we visit the picturesque and iconic seaside villages of Galaxidi and Nafpactos and savour a cup of delicious Greek coffee before arriving in Delphi, home to the famous oracle.

Day 5: Delphi – Kalambaka (FB,D)
After breakfast, we’ll visit the ruins of Delphi including the Temple of Apollo. A relaxing drive out of Delphi will take us through the Plain of Thessaly, the breadbasket of Greece. SCENICENRICH We’ll call in at Arachova, a traditional mountain town famous for its local produce including “formaela” cheese, a staple diet for the 3,000 townsfolk. We continue on to Kalambaka, situated beneath the majestic limestone pinnacles of Meteora.

Day 6: Kalambaka – Athens (FB,HD)
As early as the 11th century AD hermit monks were known to live in the caves of the limestone pillars. This morning we’ll visit two of the rock monasteries at this UNESCO site. We arrive back in Athens in time to relax before our farewell dinner at a stylish local restaurant, the perfect way to say goodbye to Greece.

Today we travel to the Gallipoli Peninsula, site of the WWI landings by allied forces including ANZAC troops on the morning of April 25, 1915. We explore the sights and gain an understanding of this unforgettable and sombre location, set amongst steep cliffs, dead-end canyons and barren ridges. A picnic lunch is provided and there is time to explore the landmark sites such as ANZAC Cove, the Nek, Lone Pine and Shrapnel Gully.

The day’s sightseeing begins with a fascinating tour of Homer’s Troy, a legendary site of the Trojan Wars and home to a replica of the infamous Trojan Horse. We continue our historic journey in Pergamon, where we enjoy lunch. We’ll visit the magnificent Acropolis, which contains the ruins of Pergamon’s acclaimed 200,000 volume library. We depart for Izmir, where this evening a spectacular dinner has been organised at one of the best seafood restaurants in the city.

Day 11: Izmir – Kusadasi (FB,D)
A treat awaits as we visit incomparable Ephesus, perhaps the world’s best-preserved ancient city that once housed the Temple of Artemis, completed in 550 B.C and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Here among other amazing sites such as the Library, we will visit the House of Virgin Mary, who is reputed to have come to Ephesus with the apostle John shortly before the end of her life in 37 AD.

Day 12: Kusadasi – Samos – Kusadasi (FB,L,D)
SCENICENRICH Today we briefly leave Turkey behind and journey to the Greek island of Samos. Our local guide will show us around Samos town before we learn about the local industries of ceramics and ouzo. We head into the fertile hills, covered with vineyards to visit one of the many beautiful ancient monasteries on the island, Agia Triada and be told about the tragic history of the priest monk who founded it. We then arrive in Pythagorion, birthplace of the mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras which also boasts the largest manmade marina in the Mediterranean. Lunch is followed by our ferry ride back to Turkey. Tonight enjoy dinner at our hotel.

Day 13: Kusadasi – Pamukkale (FB,L,D)
Following breakfast, we travel to Aphrodisias. We’ll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, before continuing to remarkable Pamukkale (Hierapolis). Tonight, watch the sunset over the white cliffs for a truly unique and memorable sight.

Day 14: Pamukkale – Antalya (FB,L,HD)
Enjoy the thermal waters at the hotel before we depart for Antalya, Turkey’s principal holiday resort which is situated on a cliff over the Mediterranean and surrounded by mountains. We’ll get a chance to visit the large archaeological museum rich in Classical, Roman, Byzantine and Seljuk artefacts, which includes ‘God Gallery’. The afternoon is at leisure, and dinner tonight is at an exquisite restaurant in the centre of town.

Day 15: Antalya (FB,HD)
The region around Antalya abounds with astonishing natural beauty and awesome historical treasures. First we visit Perge with an Acropolis dating back to the Stone Age. Nearby, Aspendos is famous for its exceptionally preserved theatre built in 155 A.D. We continue to Side, overflowing with archaeological wonders and surrounded on both sides by the deep, blue water of the Mediterranean before returning to Antalya. Tonight an exclusive dinner has been planned at the renowned Club Arma, located near the old town.

Day 16: Antalya – Cappadocia (FB,D)
This morning we drive to Konya, a traditional caravan stop and home of the Whirling Dervishes, a mystical Sufi Muslim group. We visit the Mevlana Museum, former monastery of the Dervishes which contains the tomb of the groups 13th century spiritual leader, and the Karatay Medrese, a Seljuk school constructed in 1251. Enjoy some leisure time before we head off to the moon-like landscapes of Cappadocia.

Day 17: Cappadocia (FB,D)
We visit the main sights of this amazing location, including the surreal moon-landscape of Göreme with its rock chapels carved by early Christians in hiding. Next is the Byzantine monastic complex of Zelve which reached its zenith in the 9th and 13th centuries and the towering peak of Uchisar Castle, a sublime rock formation riddled with a network of tunnels and caves.

Day 18: Cappadocia (FB,HL,D)
Today we explore the incredible underground cities of Cappadocia, of which there are estimated to be over 200. We also visit picturesque Sinassos, which is surrounded by fruit orchards and vineyards and was a Greek settlement until 1923 when a population exchange between Turkey and Greece took place. Enjoy a traditional lunch at the Old Greek House Restaurant. SCENICENRICH We’re entertained by a Whirling Dervish performance in a 13th century Caravan Inn, where we shall be entranced by the intricate dancing and music that is as old as the building we are seated in.

Day 19: Cappadocia – Ankara (FB,HL)
This morning we visit Agzikarahan, site of a well preserved Seljuk caravanserai, where for hundreds of years camel caravans traversing ancient trade routes would stop overnight. En-route to Ankara, view the famous Salt Lake of the fabled Silk Road as you drive through the Anatolian countryside. At Ankara, we visit the Hittite Museum and Anit Kabir, the mausoleum of Ataturk, Turkey’s greatest leader in modern times whose leadership helped win the Gallipoli campaign and who created the modern secular Turkish state. A unique luncheon venue awaits in an ancient castle of this historic city. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 20: Ankara – Istanbul (FB,HD)
After breakfast we cross from Asia into Europe and return to Istanbul. Day 1: Istanbul
Welcome to Turkey. You will be met at Istanbul airport and transferred* to your centrally located hotel. Meet up this evening over a welcome drink with your fellow travellers and Tour Director.

Day 2: Istanbul (FB,HD)
After breakfast, we’ll embark on a full day tour of this amazing city. Highlights of the day include a visit to the most magnificent example of Byzantium architecture, Hagia Sophia, which boasts a massive dome, a lengthy nave, and an interior decorated with marble, precious stones and pillars from Ephesus. Topkapi is the former palace of the Ottoman sultans and now a museum with an extraordinary collection of artefacts and jewels including the Topkapi Diamond. The Blue Mosque features six graceful minarets, whose superb interior is decorated with more than 20,000 blue Iznik tiles. We have time to wander the evocative Grand Bazaar, the largest covered market in the world with over 4,000 shops before we board a boat for a cruise of the Bosphorus. We’ll witness the sumptuous riverfront palaces of the Ottomans, the Dolmabahce Palace and Beylerbeyi. This special day concludes with a delicious seafood dinner on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus.

Day 3: Istanbul – Canakkale (FB,L,D)
Today we travel to the Gallipoli Peninsula, site of the WWI landings by allied forces including ANZAC troops on the morning of April 25, 1915. We explore the sights and gain an understanding of this unforgettable and sombre location, set amongst steep cliffs, dead-end canyons and barren ridges. The difficulty of the troops’ task can only be appreciated first hand. A picnic lunch is provided and there is time to explore the landmarks sites such as ANZAC Cove, the Nek, Lone Pine and Shrapnel Gully.

Day 4: Canakkale – Izmir (FB,L,HD)
The day’s sightseeing begins with a fascinating tour of Homer’s Troy, a legendary site of the Trojan Wars and home to a replica of the infamous Trojan Horse. We continue our historic journey in Pergamon, surrounded by high mountains, where we enjoy lunch. We’ll visit the magnificent Acropolis, which contains the ruins of Pergamon’s acclaimed 200,000 volume library, whose contents were gifted to Cleopatra by Mark Antony. We depart for Izmir, where this evening a spectacular dinner has been organised at one of the best seafood restaurants in the city.

Day 5: Izmir – Kusadasi (FB,D)
A treat awaits as we visit incomparable Ephesus, perhaps the world’s best-preserved ancient city that once housed the Temple of Artemis, completed in 550 B.C and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Around 100 AD the city had a population approaching 500,000 people, and to date only 15% has been excavated. Here among other amazing sites such as the Library, we will visit the House of Virgin Mary, who is reputed to have come to Ephesus with the apostle John shortly before the end of her life in 37 AD.

Day 6: Kusadasi (FB,L,D)
SCENICENRICH Today we briefly leave Turkey behind and journey to the Greek island of Samos, located in the shimmering Aegean Sea. Our local guide will show us around Samos town before we learn about the local industries of ceramics and ouzo. We head into the fertile hills, covered with vineyards to visit one of the many beautiful ancient monasteries on the island, Agia Triada and be told about the tragic history of the priest monk who founded it. We then arrive in Pythagorion, birthplace of the mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras which also boasts the largest manmade marina in the Mediterranean. Lunch is followed by our ferry ride back to Turkey. Tonight enjoy dinner at our hotel.

Day 7: Kusadasi – Pamukkale (FB,L,D)
Following breakfast, we travel to Aphrodisias, a city dedicated to Aphrodite, Goddess of Love and Fertility. We’ll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, before continuing to remarkable Pamukkale (Hierapolis). Known as the cotton castle, frequent earthquakes in antiquity gave rise to thermal springs containing chalk. The effect leaves thick white layers of limestone and travertine cascading down the hill much like a frozen waterfall. Tonight, watch the sunset over the white cliffs for a truly unique and memorable sight.

Day 8: Pamukkale – Antalya (FB,L,HD)
Enjoy the thermal waters at the hotel before we depart for Antalya, Turkey’s principal holiday resort which is situated on a cliff over the Mediterranean and surrounded by mountains. Founded in 2 B.C., the town was historically a major Roman and Byzantine port. We’ll get a chance to visit the large archaeological museum rich in Classical, Roman, Byzantine and Seljuk artefacts, which includes ‘God Gallery’ – a collection of 15 statues of classical gods from Aphrodite to Zeus. In total, the museum contains 14 exhibition halls featuring over 5,000 items. The afternoon is at leisure, and dinner tonight is at an exquisite restaurant in the centre of town.

Day 9: Antalya (FB,HD)
The region around Antalya abounds with astonishing natural beauty and awesome historical treasures. First we visit Perge, visited twice by St. Paul and the best example of a Roman city in the Pamphylian plain, with an Acropolis dating back to the Stone Age. Nearby, Aspendos is famous for its exceptionally preserved theatre built in 155 A.D. The theatre has a capacity of 20,000 people and is still in use today. We continue to Side, overflowing with archaeological wonders and surrounded on both sides by the deep, blue water of the Mediterranean. We visit the impressive Amphitheatre which dates to the Hellenistic period before returning to Antalya. Tonight an exclusive dinner has been planned at the renowned Club Arma, located near the old town.

Day 10: Antalya – Cappadocia (FB,D)
This morning we drive to Konya, a traditional caravan stop and home of the Whirling Dervishes, a mystical Sufi Muslim group. This unusual religious sect is best known for its ritual dance and haunting music. We visit the Mevlana Museum, former monastery of the Dervishes which contains the tomb of the groups 13th century spiritual leader, and the Karatay Medrese, a Seljuk school constructed in 1251. Enjoy some leisure time before we head off to the moon-like landscapes of Cappadocia. The rocks in the region have eroded into hundreds of spectacular pillars, known as ‘fairy chimneys’. Our hotel for the next three days will amaze you and is one of the most unusual you will experience.

Day 11: Cappadocia (FB,D)
Beginning in primitive times, the inhabitants of this region carved out the soft rocks to form houses, churches and monasteries. We visit the main sights of this amazing location, including the surreal moon-landscape of Göreme with its rock chapels carved by early Christians in hiding. Next is the Byzantine monastic complex of Zelve which reached its zenith in the 9th and 13th centuries and the towering peak of Uchisar Castle, a sublime rock formation riddled with a network of tunnels and caves.

Day 12: Cappadocia (FB,HL,D)
Today we explore the incredible underground cities of Cappadocia, of which there are estimated to be over 200. The complexes in many cases housed thousands of people, consisting of numerous chambered floors linked by tunnels and galleries with ventilation shafts and massive circular stone doors that could be rolled closed for protection. We also visit picturesque Sinassos, which is surrounded by fruit orchards and vineyards and was a Greek settlement until 1923 when a population exchange between Turkey and Greece took place. The town retains many fine stone buildings of Greek origin. Enjoy a traditional lunch at the Old Greek House Restaurant. SCENICENRICH We’re entertained by a Whirling Dervish performance in a 13th century Caravan Inn, where we shall be entranced by the intricate dancing and music that is as old as the building we are seated in.

Day 13: Cappadocia – Ankara (FB,HL)
This morning we visit Agzikarahan, site of a well preserved Seljuk caravanserai, where for hundreds of years camel caravans traversing ancient trade routes would stop overnight. En-route to Ankara, view the famous Salt Lake of the fabled Silk Road as you drive through the Anatolian countryside. At Ankara, we visit the Hittite Museum and Anit Kabir, the mausoleum of Ataturk, Turkey’s greatest leader in modern times whose leadership helped win the Gallipoli campaign and who created the modern secular Turkish state. A unique luncheon venue awaits in an ancient castle of this historic city. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 14: Ankara – Istanbul (FB,HD)
After breakfast we depart the capital, travelling the Anatolian plain until we reach the Marmara Sea where we cross from Asia into Europe and return to Istanbul. On arrival we’ll visit the exotic Spice Market for last minute souvenirs or savour a last Turkish coffee. This afternoon enjoy your Scenic FreeChoice activity at no extra cost. You will be met at Fiumicino Airport and transferred* to your centrally located hotel. Our first excursion today is an afternoon walking tour to see many of Rome’s famous sights including the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona. See the city illuminated by night on the way to our welcome dinner. Please schedule flights to arrive before midday.

Day 2: Rome (FB)

We begin today’s guided sightseeing at the Vatican City. See centuries of accumulated wealth during our visit to the Vatican Museums and the breathtaking Sistine Chapel. The highlights here are Michelangelo’s Last Judgement and Old Testament Frescoes. We enter the world’s largest church, St. Peter’s Basilica and emerge into St. Peter’s Square to marvel at Bernini’s colonnade and Michelangelo’s impressive dome. We continue to the Forum and follow in the footsteps of the ancients to the mighty Colosseum, opened in 80AD.

Day 3: Rome – Sorrento (FB,HD)

This morning we venture to Pompeii, which lay buried under tonnes of ash following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Our tour enables us to appreciate the incredible level of civilisation enjoyed by the Romans. We continue on to Sorrento, perched dramatically on cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. SCENICENRICH Tonight we enjoy dinner at the famous Francischiello’s family restaurant and enjoy the wonderful panorama of the bay of Naples and Mt Vesuvius, while mama makes fresh pasta in the kitchen.

We make the short hydrofoil trip across the gulf of Sorrento to Capri. SCENIC FREECHOICE choose from: (1) a funicular ride to Capri town for a journey around the island; or (2) visit the Blue Grotto, followed by a funicular ride to Capri town; or (3) join a fishing boat at sea and enjoy the freshest of lunches on board. For those selecting (1) or (2) above, we enjoy a light lunch prior to our return to Sorrento. Once back, there is time at leisure to explore the town.

Day 5: Sorrento – Perugia (FB,D)

We journey into the green heart of Italy, viewing enchanting hill towns, olive groves and vineyards. We stop at the medieval village of Assisi, home town of St. Francis. On our walking tour around the old town, we visit the Basilica of San Francesco, built in the 13th century after the Saints death. It’s only a short drive to Perugia to view the Fontana Maggoire and the monuments around the site of the Roman Forum – the Duomo and the Palazzo dei Priori, Umbria’s finest palace.

Day 6: Perugia – Florence (FB,HL)

We drive past tranquil Lake Trasimeno to Siena, a delightful medieval city and UNESCO World Heritage site. Our local guide will show us the Torre della Mangia, the large bell tower overlooking the Piazza del Campo – a sloping amphitheatre of a square surrounded by cafés and bars. We continue on to San Gimignano, famous for its 14 towers. SCENICENRICH We visit a Tuscan farmhouse where we will be shown the cantina and learn the techniques of wine and oil production used in the area. A typical rustic lunch will feature the local produce and wines. Our orientation tour of San Gimignano will feature the main square, dominated by the Communal Palace and the Duomo. The views along the cliff walk are spectacular with the five pretty villages clinging to the rocks above rocky harbours filled with tiny fishing boats. We continue on to famous Santa Margherita in the heart of the Italian Riviera.

This morning we board our boat for a breathtaking cruise along the Ligurian coastline. We stop at the stunning inlet of San Fruttuoso with its elegant architecture and see its 13th century Abbey. Our excursion continues on to Portofino, a gorgeous fishing village and playground of the rich and famous. Admire the super yachts and elegant villas in and around the bay or people-watch in an elegant café before boarding the motor launch for our return to Santa Margherita.

Day 10: Santa Margherita – Venice (FB,HD)

We pass Palladian villas and pencil pine trees as we approach Verona, famous as the home of the tragic lovers, Romeo and Juliet. With our local guide on our walking tour we visit the amazingly intact Roman arena, built in the first century AD and still in use as a home to the summer Opera festival. We will also see Juliet’s balcony, the Piazza Bra and the ornate tombs of the Scaligeri family. Then on to magnificent Venice – the most unique city in the world! We cruise up the Grand Canal by private motor launch past ornate and gilded Palazzos and Palladian churches to our superbly located hotel. We cross the Slovenian border en-route to Lipica stud farm and see the beautiful white Lipizzaner horses that perform dressage at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. We then visit Slovenia’s greatest tourist site – the Karst Caves at Postojna. A mini-train will take us underground through a series of beautiful halls adorned with stalagmites and stalagtites. Later this afternoon we arrive in the capital Ljubljana, where we enjoy dinner this evening at a local restaurant.

Ljubljana means ‘much loved’ – you will see why as we appreciate the attractive architecture of this city, set under its ancient fortress. Our sightseeing tour includes the Castle, Opera House, National Museum, Franciscan Church and St Nicholas Cathedral. A highlight awaits as we journey to one of Europe’s most picturesque settings today – Lake Bled. SCENICENRICH We step back in time and take a traditional wooden ‘Pletna’ boat to the stunningly beautiful island in the lake and visit the historic Church of St Mary with its wishing well. Nearly 2,500 years old, Budapest is one of Eastern Europe’s most ancient yet cosmopolitan cities. Your morning tour will visit both towns of Buda and Pest, linked by the famous Chain Bridge. Our journey this morning takes us to the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic on the north Dalmatian coastline, where we reach the delightful port of Zadar. We stop briefly to savour the delights of the old city, which is located on a tiny promontory and largely free of traffic. We then continue our spectacular drive south along the Dalmatian coast to Split, site of the former Palace of the Emperor Diocletian. Today, the Palace constitutes the inner core of this bustling port city and is inhabited with shops and market squares.

Day 6: Split – Dubrovnik (FB,D)

This morning we join a local guide for our city tour, which will reveal the remains of the massive Imperial Palace of Diocletian, constructed from 293 AD, primarily as a retirement home. We will visit the church which is thought to be the oldest in the world and which is still used for services today. Day 7: Dubrovnik (FB)

The walled old town of Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World heritage site and has remained largely unchanged since medieval times. The prosperity of the town has always been based on maritime trade and in the Middle Ages it rivalled Venice as a maritime power. We will enjoy a walk around the medieval ramparts which enclose the town and provide magnificent vistas of both the sea and the famous city of red roofs and grey stone. We will also see Onofrio’s Fountain, the Rector’s Palace and the Franciscan and Dominican monasteries.

Day 8: Dubrovnik (FB,L)

SCENIC FREECHOICE choose from: (1) a boat trip to the green island of Korcula, where you can discover the charms of the old town whilst enjoying the views towards the mainland, or perhaps take a dip in the azure waters of the Adriatic at one of the secluded bays before enjoying lunch; or (2) enjoy a guided tour of the Dominican Monastery in the old town which is seen, by many, as the most valuable cultural experience in Dubrovnik. Here you will witness treasures of the old Renaissance school of Ragusa including old manuscripts, paintings and the tombstones of many famous Ragusans.

Day 9: Dubrovnik – Plitvice National Park (FB,D)

We farewell Dubrovnik and head north along the Adriatic, past the glittering islands of Brac and Hvar to the seaport of Trogir, the best-preserved Romanesque-Gothic old town in central Europe. Trogir’s medieval core, surrounded by walls, comprises a preserved castle and tower and a series of dwellings, churches and palaces from the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. A last chance to enjoy the sea-breeze before we turn inland and enjoy the rugged natural scenery of the Balkans as we head towards the unique Plitvice National Park.

Day 10: Plitvice National Park – Ljubljana (FB)

This morning we will enjoy a guided tour of the world famous National Park along meandering pathways as we view a series of emerald green lakes, stepped and linked by increasingly impressive waterfalls. Continuing our journey, we pass through Karlovac, a city that withstood seven Ottoman sieges in ancient times and is noteworthy for its beautiful parks and rivers. We cross into Slovenia and arrive in its capital Ljubljana, which means ‘much loved’ – you will see why as we appreciate the attractive architecture of this delightful city. Our sightseeing tour includes the Castle, Opera House, National Museum, Franciscan Church and St. Nicholas Cathedral. Tonight, an opportunity to wander amongst the lively cafés and restaurants to experience the lively atmosphere.

Day 11: Ljubljana (FB,D)

One of Europe’s most picturesque and iconic settings is our destination today – Lake Bled, formed after a glacier retreat and overlooked by the famous Bled Castle. SCENICENRICH We step back in time and take a traditional wooden ‘Pletna’ boat to the stunningly beautiful island in the lake and visit the historic Church of St Mary with its wishing well – you may wish to ring the bell for good luck. Following a short drive through Triglav National Park we have time to relax and witness Slovenia’s largest glacial lake, Lake Bohinj, before returning to Bled. SCENICENRICH Enjoy coffee and cake at the famous lakeside Villa Bled, former residence of President Tito, where he hosted global statesmen in the post-war years. On our return to Ljubljana you can unwind or wander the markets for souvenirs before dining at a local restaurant this evening.

Day 12: Ljubljana – Venice (FB)

Today we will visit Slovenia’s greatest tourist site – the Karst Caves at Postojna. A mini-train will take us underground through a series of beautiful halls adorned with stalagmites and stalagtites, unique shapes that will leave you spellbound. Then on to Lipica stud farm, established for the Holy Roman Empire’s benefit in 1580, where we see the beautiful white Lipizzaner horses that perform dressage at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. We cross the Italian border and pass the cosmopolitan port city of Trieste, arriving this afternoon in magnificent Venice – the most unique city in the world! We cruise up the Grand Canal by private motor launch past ornate and gilded Palazzos and Palladian churches to our superbly located hotel.

Day 13: Venice (FB,HD)

SCENICENRICH This morning we enjoy a romantic gondola serenade as we enjoy this iconic Venetian experience whilst gliding under ancient bridges amongst the breathtaking canals. We will appreciate the wealth and power that pervaded this maritime city state in times past during our walking tour of the city. We shall enjoy the bustling cafés in the square, see the clock tower ‘dei Mori’, the Campanile and visit both the stunning Basilica of San Marco and the spectacular Doge’s Palace. SCENIC FREECHOICE choose from: (1) a private lagoon cruise visiting some of the many islands surrounding Venice; or (2) take a walking tour to visit the Fine Arts Academy. Day 1: Prague

You will be met at Prague International airport and transferred* to your centrally located hotel. This Bohemian metropolitan city situated on the banks of the River Vltava offers a blend of both old and new world’s which is sure to entice your appetite. Meet up this evening over a welcome drink with your fellow travellers and Tour Director.

Day 2: Prague (FB,HD)

This morning we will discover one of the truly magical cities of Europe – Prague. With our local guide we will walk around Hradcany Castle, visit St Vitus Church and the Mala Strana and walk across the Charles Bridge. One of the most familiar sights in Prague, the Charles Bridge was commissioned in 1357 by Charles IV after the Judith Bridge was destroyed by floods and provides the connection between the Old Town and Little Quarter. We then explore the Old Town Square, see the monument to the Protestant Reformer Jan Huss and witness the Astronomical clock strike the hour. With so much to offer enjoy free time this afternoon to explore this bustling city at leisure. Perhaps treat yourself to a coffee and pastry in one of Prague’s famous coffee houses or simply marvel at the diverse range of architectural designs featured throughout the city, highly recognised for its red roofed buildings. This evening we enjoy a welcome dinner of hearty Czech cuisine.

Day 3: Prague (FB)

SCENIC FREECHOICE choose from: (1) a bohemian glass tour to learn more about the customs of the world famous glassware. Rückl crystal is linked to a 300 year long tradition in glass making as a family and today manufactures an extensive range of cut 24% leaded crystal in a wide variety of decorations; or (2) a walking tour of Prague’s Communist era buildings and events. Step back in time to 1948 and re-live the history of these dark controlling years; or (3) a visit to the 13th century Gothic-style Jewish synagogue and its amazing cemetery. Built around 1270 this is the oldest synagogue in Europe. The cemetery has over 12,000 headstones dating back to 1478.

Day 4: Prague – Berlin (FB,D)

We depart Prague for Dresden, perhaps the greenest city in Germany. Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendour. On our tour we see the Frauenkirche, the Castle of the Electors of Saxony, the Semper Opera House and visit the courtyards of the Zwinger. We continue our journey through the Spreewald forest to Germany’s capital, Berlin our home for the next two nights.

Day 5: Berlin (FB,HD)

This morning we journey to Potsdam, former residence of the Prussian Kings until 1918, SCENICENRICH where our local expert historian on Potsdam shares his knowledge of the town and its history as we visit the Cecilienhof where the Potsdam Treaty was signed in 1945. After free time in Potsdam we return back to Berlin. Berlin has undergone an exciting transformation since reunification in 1989. SCENICENRICH We have arranged special entry to explore the renovated parliamentary building that was controversially set on fire in 1933. After our tour, we’ll enjoy coffee and cake whilst under the famous glass dome. This afternoon visit the Brandenburg Gate, State Opera House, Alexander Platz, drive ‘Unter den Linden’ and visit the former Checkpoint Charlie. Checkpoint Charlie was once the notorious border crossing between the Soviet and American sectors, and witness to a number of dramatic events during the cold war.

Day 6: Berlin – Warsaw (FB,D)

This morning we are taken to the main train station for our journey to Warsaw aboard our first class rail carriage. Time en-route to relax and watch the rural scenery change from the evergreen forests and rolling hills of Germany to the broad agricultural farmland of western Poland. We arrive this evening into Warsaw. Poland’s cultural, entertainment and financial capital was believed to be founded in the late 13th Century, when the Duke Boleshaw built a castle here overlooking the Vistula river.

Day 7: Warsaw (FB,HD)

Warsaw was largely destroyed in World War II, however the historic centre has been rebuilt and has attained UNESCO World Heritage status. We visit the Jewish Ghetto with a local guide this morning for a striking reminder of the suffering endured in WWII. We see the monument to the Ghetto heroes, the Palace of Culture and the Chopin Memorial. SCENIC FREECHOICE choose from: (1) an excursion to Wilanow Palace – known as Poland’s Versailles; or (2) a magical tour exploring the mythical founders of Warsaw. SCENICENRICH This evening an exclusive piano concert of Chopin music in Lazienki Palace, stunningly located on an island in a lake, is followed by dinner in one of Warsaw’s finest establishments.

Day 8: Warsaw – Krakow (FB,D)

We travel to Czestochowa and admire the portrait of the ‘Black Madonna’, said to have been painted by St Luke and located in the beautiful 14th century Jasna Gora Paulite Monastery. We continue to Auschwitz and visit the former concentration camp and its museum, for chilling reminders of the Holocaust in World War II. Early this evening we arrive in the city of Krakow. Poland’s former capital for nearly six centuries and largest city was one of the few Polish cities scarcely damaged in World War II allowing us to enjoy it in original glory.

Day 9: Krakow (FB,HD)

Sightseeing of this UNESCO World Heritage site includes a guided walking tour of the old town where we visit St. Mary’s Church, the Cloth Hall, the cathedral and castle on Wawel Hill. This afternoon we visit the nearby 800 year old Wieliczka Salt Mines. Our tour includes statues of historic and mythical figures, all sculpted by miners out of rock salt. This evening we will soak up the atmosphere of a Polish folklore show with dinner.

Day 10: Krakow – Budapest (FB)

After breakfast we depart Krakow and cross the border into Slovakia, passing the 13th century Castle of Oravsky Hrad en-route to the Hungarian capital of Budapest. Be impressed by this majestic city on the banks of the mighty Danube with its powerful Parliament building and towering castle overlooking the hill. Witness by night the transformation of the city as it illuminates under the night sky.

Your morning tour will visit both towns of Buda and Pest, linked by the famous Chain Bridge. Guarded by two lion statues on both bridgeheads, the suspension bridge offers one of the cities most beautiful views. Enjoy visiting Heroes’square, Matthias Church, the Fisherman’s Bastion and the medieval town on Castle Hill. This evening enjoy a highlight dinner at a Hungary restaurant.
